THE THREE ELEMENTS OF HEALTH
Research shows that there are three elements to obtaining all-round health: mind, body and social wellbeing.
Mind
It’s a well-known fact that physical activity has a positive effect on our mental health. Engaging in exercise stimulates the release of endorphins which promotes a positive state of mind. Not only that, but physical exercise increases the brain’s sensitivity to our ‘happiness’ hormones; serotonin and norepinephrine, which improve mood. This doesn’t mean hours spent on the treadmill either, even a gentle walk is enough to feel the effects.
Body
Both physical exercise and the food we eat play an important part in maintaining physical health. Exercise is great for our bone and muscle health, especially when ensuring adequate consumption of protein. Protein can help to build and maintain lean muscle mass, as well as promoting the maintenance of a healthy weight. A diet rich in unprocessed, wholefoods will contain all the nutrients needed to fuel the body to perform at your peak, both physically and mentally.
Social
Studies have shown that loneliness has negative effects on blood pressure, and can result in inflammation, akin to that which is caused by physical strains. By increasing our positive social interactions, we can reduce these effects. Physical interaction also stimulates the production of the chemical oxytocin, which works to reduce physical aches and pains, as well as reducing feelings of anxiety.
Additionally, studies have shown that improved social relationships increase life expectancy. It’s not the quantity of these bonds which make the difference, but the strength and quality of those friendships. So, take a moment to spend some time with the people you love, improving your social health and putting you well on the path to your optimal physical and mental state.
