Budget Eating in Reykjavik

When it comes to dining, or even simply sipping on a Coke, Reykjavik is one of the most expensive places on earth to eat and drink.

Here is our non-exhaustive list of ways to save a bit of money when traveling and staying in Reykjavik.

A coke costs $4. Yes, that’s right, $4, and most other drinks cost about the same, and this is in a grocery store. Orka, on the other hand, costs $1. Want to know what Orka is? Check out my blog, but it is apparently the unhealthiest energy drink in the country, but hey when you need a fix, you need a fix.

Street food in Reykjavik?

There is a street food corner that comes alive at night, but that is not all that cheap, ironically the cheapest place is also the most famous. Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur – which means the best Hot Dogs in Town costs under $4 for a hot dog. Not big enough to qualify as a meal, but comes close.

Best place to try Hakarl?

OK, so Hakarl is a fermented shark that stinks of ammonia, mmmm sold yet? So, if you are on a budget then trying Hakarl might not exactly be on the top of your list, but you can try it for free at Reykjavík flea market in the center of town. Job has done.

Is there free food in Reykjavík?

Depending on how much of an actual bin-dipper you wanna be, the flea market is great for free food. Basically, the vendors here offer lots of tasters from salmon to jam, and so long as you look like a genuine buyer you can at least kill a little bit of hunger without breaking the bank literally at all. The food is free.
