Can you eat fish poop? It turns out you can, well kind of. . Going for a poop, as the book says “everybody poops”. Obviously there is a declaimer that says that princesses do not poop, such as Princess Diana, or Baby Spice.
Everyone else though and that includes fish poop. We have agreed that you can eat it, but where do you eat fish poop and indeed should you eat it?

You have not been to Luang Prabang unless you have eaten fish poop dip
Last year and just before coronavirus was to destroy everything we held near and dear I was lucky enough to find myself in Luang Prabang. If you visit Laos, Luang Prabang is a must see place. There are many reasons for this, but food is definitely one of them. And you will be happy to know not all of it is derived from shit.

Eating shit in Laos!
OK, I am fully aware that this joke will wear thin very quickly, but to be fair I am also very childish, so no promises. Hoping to run tours to Laos we were being led around by some local experts. They suggested we head to a restaurant on the riverside for a “local delicacy”. My friend was excited. Me less so, I am aware that delicacy is short form for “crap food”. Sorry I did it again.
We headed to the riverside
By this point we’d already done street food and had a few beers, so whilst the men u included some classic dishes, such as Kai Paen, we were here for chills fish poop.
We ordered a fish dish, which was to come with the game changer of the evening, the dipping sauce.
Chili fish poop dip AKA Jaew Kee Pa.
Jaew Kee Pa is translated as “Fish Penny Sauce”, but as our Laos friend pointed out it literally translated to fish poop sauce. There was no getting around what the ingredients were.
What is in the fish poop sauce?
This was where I literally lost my shit. It turns out that Jaew Kee Pa consists of fish eggs, sesame seeds, sesame oil, and chilies. Obviously this makes it spicy, but to to so much of a degree that you will die. The sauce is very medium level and nothin to be scared of.
It was though one of the best sauces that I have yet to try in Laos and went will with both fish and meat dishes.
So, you didn’t actually eat fish poop?
I’m a pretty game fella when it comes to trying new things. Now whilst the thought of poop did gross me out a bit, I was actually a bit disappointed to learn that it was just a hot sauce, delicious though t might have been.
So, no as things stand I have never eaten fish poop, I have though eaten Jaew Kee Pa, which according to the locals at least means I have “been to Luang Prabang”.
And there you have it! Laos might not be number one on everyones list when it comes to dining in South-East Asia, but it has a lot to offer, much like Cambodia.

And that is all the shit you need to know about this famous Laotian dish. And best of all? That was the last of my poop jokes.
