Moorooduc Estate Chardonnay 2011

It’s been a trendy ride on the I don’t drink Chardonnay wagon for a while, but we’re happily starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel. A quiet but fierce leader in this noble crusade is the Moorooduc Estate Chardonnay; a relatively unknown name from the eponymous sub-region tucked away on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula- a region that has piqued critics’ Chardonnay attention. Moorooduc Estate is a small, family run winery that has developed an enviable reputation for producing some of the most complex and elegant wines from the region. Their philosophy is simple: make the most of the top quality ingredients they are privileged to be surrounded with. Intensive, hands-on care in the vineyard, minimal use of chemicals, wild yeast ferments and minimal intervention winemaking all nod to traditional Burgundian techniques and allow their wines to express their unique home. Starting with the 2010 vintage, there has been a complete revamp at Moorooduc Estate, and one we’re watching very closely. Seek these wines out.
