Everyman’s Whisky: Aldi

Whoever coined the phrase good things don’t come cheap, clearly never had the opportunity to experience one of Aldi’s—yes, Aldi’s—own label whisky.  Over a century ago, Aldi was first established as a local supermarket in Essen, Germany. When in 1946, brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht developed their mothers store into a chain they took the first step in molding the brand into what it is today.  Six of its whisky’s took home silver medals at the International Spirits Challenge this year, beating out brands that cost three times the 12.99 Euros ascribed to Aldi’s Highland Black 8 Year Old Whisky.

In the words of Tony Baines, Joint Managing Director of Corporate Buying at Aldi: “Being awarded these accolades proves that whisky lovers can enjoy great value drinks without compromising on quality.” When an international supermarket corners the market in affordable, quality whisky it’s big news.  But Aldi’s success is even more impressive when you take into account how much the public demand for whisky in the UK has grown, of late.  Whisky is now considered the fifth most popular alcoholic drink in the UK.  And as Aldi continues its corporate expansion, reaching 1,000 stores in the UK alone by 2022, its award-winning whisky will be enjoyed in pubs across the country (and eventually across continents), perhaps in the form of an Old Fashioned or simply with a few drops of water or an ice cube, either way it was made for you.
