Sometimes all you need in your life is some simplicity. Bartender Tokiwa likes to hone in on one ingredient, one flavor or something that is in season, which make her cocktails unique. Using different flavors and techniques she builds around that one accent and creates something different and magical.
This time Tokiwa is making an Old Buddy Old Pal with Gentleman Jack. This cocktail is a twist on the Prohibition era drink Old Pal, which is rye whiskey, dry vermouth and campari. Instead of campari, Tokiwa uses cynar (pronounced chee-nar) – an Italian liqueur that is bitter and made out of 13 herbs, primarily artichoke. This substitute provides the cocktail with bitterness and depth that was desired by the bartender. Garnished with orange oil, flower made out of orange skin and a love note, this cocktail is bound to become a favorite.
