I’ve been on a roll with Primitivo lately and this Cubardi from Schola Sarmenti has only further reinforced my opinion, that when done right, Primitivo produces exceptional wine and is surely one of my favourites. Grapes for this beautiful example are harvested from the sun drenched 60y.o vines of the Alberello vineyards and you can feel the full flavour extraction and warmth, it’s a little bit of Southern Italy in a glass!

This is one big, bone dry beast! It possesses a moreish sweetness and spicy punch, whilst packing some serious weight; full of inky ripe dark fruits, vanilla and liquorice, with a wonderful smoky undertone that is ‘oh so’ alluring. The bouquet is as appealing as the palate, it’s simply a wonderfully well rounded wine.

Full of body, with a bold acidity, juicy ripe tannins, pronounced intensity and a fantastic length finish. As I hope you can tell from my review, this wine is drinking beautifully now, but will continue to age gracefully over the next five or so years.

Mille grazie!
